      <abstract encodinganalog="5203_">The Llewelyn Riggs McKay papers (1911-1960) contain correspondence, newspaper clippings, reports and articles. Of special note is a bound volume consisting of a typescript of McKay's missionary journal and correspondence, complied and edited by his children, Douglas R. McKay and Bonnie M. Nelson. This collection also includes many original letters between the McKay family throughout McKay's schooling, teaching and army service.</abstract>

    <bioghist encodinganalog="545">
      <p>Llewelyn Riggs McKay (1904-1975), was born June 5, 1904 to David O. McKay, the ninth president of the LDS Church, and Emma Ray Riggs McKay. Llewelyn McKay served as an LDS missionary in Germany between 1922 and 1925 and later returned to Germany in 1945 as a U.S. bombing analyst during the aftermath of World War II. He married Alice Kimball Smith on 19 July, 1928 in the LDS Salt Lake Temple and together had three children: Richard L. McKay, Bonnie Jeanne McKay Nelson, and Douglas R. McKay. An educator by profession, Llewelyn McKay received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Utah, and his Ph.D from Stanford University. He began his teaching career at the University of Utah in 1929, and became head of the Language Department in 1945 until 1965. He died Jan 2, 1975.</p>
