Biographical Sketch

Lawrence Scanlan was born to Paddy and Kitty Scanlan in the townland of Ballytarsna in the Parish of Boherlahan near Cashel, County Tipperary, Ireland. He was baptised and christened on 29 September 1843. Scanlan attended the All Hallows missionary seminary in Dublin and was ordained a priest in 1868. He first labored in California and then entered Utah in 1873 to become the missionary rector. He served as Utah's first Catholic leader for over thirty years and his accomplishment were numerous. One of his most remembered was building the Cathedral of the Madeleine in downtown Salt Lake City. Bishop Scanlan died in 1915 and was interred in that cathedral.
