University of Washington professor of surgery and School of Medicine administrator.

Henry N. Harkins (1905-1967), the first professor of a clinicial department at the University of Washington School of Medicine, was appointed on December 18, 1946. He became executive officer of the department of surgery at the same time and served from 1947 to 1964. (The term "chairman" was not used by the school for the head of a department until several years later.) Dr. Harkins is credited with establishing the department's teaching goals and organizing it into six divisions. He specialized in the areas of general and thoracic surgery and produced several works on gastric, geriatric and burn surgical techniques.
