			<p>Dr. Henry Walter Smith (1913-1998) was a Professor of Soils at Washington State
				University from 1943 to 1978, where he taught soil morphology, genesis, and
				classification, and later served as an Emeritus Professor. He received his Bachelor
				of Science degree from Nebraska State Normal College in 1936, his Master of Science
				degree in 1938 and Ph.D. in 1941 from the University of Nebraska. Dr. Smith belonged
				to several professional organizations, including: the American Association for the
				Advancement of Science, the American Society of Agronomy, and Soil Science Society
				of America. In 1963, Dr. Smith received the Agronomic Education Award, the Henry W.
				Smith Soil Monolith Collection in Johnson Hall was named in Dr. Smith's honor in
				1983, and in 1985, he received the Soil Science Distinguished Service Award.</p>
