         <p>Carl Ritchie '49 was born in Salem, Oregon on June 30, 1923. He graduated from Salem High School in 1942 as valedictorian. During World War II, Ritchie served as a sergeant in the signal corps. He attended Willamette University on the G.I. Bill and graduated in 3 years. Ritchie was an acting instructor at Willamette University from 1956 until 1962 when he assumed the role of Head of Creative Arts at Mount Angel College. Ritchie was a founding member of the Pentacle Theater.</p>
         <p>Ritchie served as public relations director for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival from 1957 to 1967. During this time he wrote and directed several plays for the festival. He was an actor, scene builder, and producer. He was also a speech writer for Oregon Governor Tom McCall during the 1970 election. In 1972, he won a Peabody Award for his work on the KOAC/Corvallis, Oregon program "Conversations with Will Shakespeare and Certain of His Friends."</p>

         <p>The Carl Ritchie papers contain transcripts of radio broadcasts, including radio dramas, advertisements and news programs. Photographs from student theater productions and reports from Ritchie's time as Head of Creative Arts at Mount Angel College are also included.</p>

         <p>The Carl Ritchie papers have been described in three series. Series I: Radio, Series II: Theater, and Series III: Mount Angel College Creative Arts. The files in these series have been arranged alphabetically.</p>
