         <p>The G.M. Standifer Construction Company built two shipyards on the Columbia River for the World War I effort: One in North Portland, Oregon, for wooden ships, called the Standifer-Clarkson Shipyard, and one in Vancouver, Washington, for steel ships. Both yards were closed in 1921.</p>
