<head>Biography of Charles J. Ohnhaus</head><p>Charles J. Ohnhaus was the son of John Ohnhaus and <persname>Anna Hubbel Ohnhaus</persname>, who were married in Johnson County, Iowa, on August 21, 1873. The family later moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where John Ohnhaus purchased a plot of land in June, 1879. Charles Ohnhaus became a stenographer and typist. He was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad in Cheyenne (March-April, 1899), by the Indian branch of the Interior Department in Indian Territory (June, 1900-April, 1901) and by the Superintendent of Naval Construction in San Francisco (April-September, 1901). He then returned to Cheyenne, where he became stenographer and assistant clerk for the U.S. Courts. He was present with Deputy Sheriff <persname>Leslie Snow</persname> in an adjoining room while <persname>Tom Horn</persname> allegedly confessed to the murder of <persname>Willie Nickell</persname> to Marshal <persname>Joe Lefors</persname>. Ohnhaus’s transcription of this confession was used in evidence against Horn at his trial for the murder.</p>
