The Susan Barbara Tallmon Sargent papers (1891-1973) consist of correspondence, journals, news clippings, reports, articles, guest books, and financial documents collected by Sargent's niece, Ardis Hitchcock, who was planning on writing a biography of Sargent, a medical missionary to China.

Susan Barbara Tallmon (1872-1950) was born in Iowa on 15 December 1872 to George Washington and Susan Carhart Tallmon. She was educated at Grinnell College and received an M.D. from Northwestern University Woman's Medical School in 1902. She was a physician and medical missionary to Lintsing, China, from 1905 to 1918. She married Rev. Benjamin Farrington Sargent in 1916. After returning from China, the couple lived in Berkeley, California. She died on 21 February 1950.
