The Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education (ICNE), began in 1969, was a first of its kind in the nation consortium that included Eastern Washington State College (now Eastern Washington University), Fort Wright College of the Holy Names, Washington State University, and Whitworth College (now Whitworth University). The college changed its name to the WSU College of Nursing in 2008, and the next year moved to the WSU Health Sciences Spokane campus, the first college to relocate there. Current degree programs include BSN, RN-BSN, MN, PhD, DNP, and graduate certificates.

Since 1995, Native American high school students representing various tribes from the Northwest have been given the chance to participate in Na-ha-shnee, a two-week summer camp at Washington State University Spokane. The program encourages youth to try out a career in the health sciences by providing hands-on learning experiences taught by healthcare providers, faculty at WSU Spokane, and health sciences college students. The courses cover a range of subjects from basic science, and leadership, to Native American education.

Washington State University's Native American Health Sciences (NAHS) program and the Center for Native American Health (CNAH) are based at the WSU Spokane campus, upon the original homelands of the Spokane Tribe of Indians. Since its inception in 2007, WSU NAHS has run both the Na-ha-shnee Summer Institute that serves Native American youth interested in health occupations, and an annual academic retention program that has helped support the graduation of almost 70 Native American nurses. In addition to being responsible for helping the health science colleges recruit the number of Native American’s entering the health care workforce, the mission and work of NAHS and CNAH, includes: culturally embedding and teaching indigenous healing perspectives through newly developed curriculum and clinical education modalities to counterbalance western forms of medical and health education with traditional understandings and perspectives, toward equitable Indigenous patient care; and providing a space for tribal community health initiatives through our land-grant mission focused in planning, training, facilitation, support, and collaboration with tribal nation partners and affiliates.
