Algernon Cyrus Dixon was born in Illinois. He attended Oregon State Normal School, Monmouth, from 1892-1893. In 1900 he was a foreman at the Booth-Kelly Lumber Co. in Springfield, Oregon, and eventually became mill superintendent, sales manager, general manager, and vice-president of the company. He was a director of the Ochoco Timber Co., Eugene, and trustee and president of the West Coast Lumbermens' Association. From 1911 to 1923 he was on the Board of Regents, University of Oregon, much of the time as chairman of the building committee. Dixon died in 1962.
The Algernon Cyrus Dixon collection consists mainly of correspondence, both received and sent, and miscellaneous documents pertaining to Dixon's activities. The collection is arranged in six series.
The first series contains letters to and from the Board of Regents, University of Oregon. It includes correspondence with university officials, especially presidents Prince L. Campbell and Arnold Bennett Hall, and with other board members, notably Mrs. George T. Gerlinger. The correspondence continues to 1929, when the board was abolished. There is correspondence with Joseph N. Teal and H. Phimister Proctor. One major series of letters concerns the location and construction of the University of Oregon Medical School. These letters may be found in Box 1, Folders 1 and 2.
The second series consists of three folders of General Correspondence, and is contained in Box 1, Folders 3, 4 and 5.
The third series consists of correspondence regarding the NIRA (National Industrial Recovery Act) code from 1935, and may be found in Box 2, Folder 1. This is the history of the code of fair competition for the lumber and timber products industries.
The fourth series consists of letters to and from the Home Loan Bank Board. In 1932 Dixon was a candidate for appointment to the board. The correspondence contains letters of support, and requests for advice from persons dealing with the board. These letters are located in Box 2, Folder 2.
The fifth series comprises correspondence regarding the Ochoco Timber Co. From 1934 to 1940 the company consolidated its timber holdings through negotiations with the National Forest Reservation Commission. The correspondence, mainly with company president, Robert A. Booth, concerns the negotiations, and may be found in Box 2, Folders 3, 4 and 5, and Box 3, Folder 1.
The sixth series contains documents pertaining to the Booth-Kelly Lumber Co. This group contains miscellaneous reports, financial records, and minor correspondence concerning the company, 1920-1958, and may be found in Box 3, Folder 2.
