      <bioghist encodinganalog="5450_" id="a2" altrender="sync">
         <p>Charles Kaplan (February 24, 1913-April 18, 2008) was born to Russian
		  parents who immigrated to Toronto in 1906. He was a graduate of University of
		  Toronto Medical School and moved to Seattle in 1948 after serving in the Army
		  Medical Corps for four years. He practiced pediatrics in the University
		  District and served as an adjunct faculty member of the UW Medical School. He
		  served as president of the Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Federation of
		  Greater Seattle, and the American Jewish Committee. He was a founding member of
		  Temple Beth Am and the Seattle Jewish Community School. Dr. Kaplan and his wife
		  Lillian were generous contributors to many community organizations. </p>

      <scopecontent>
         <p> This interview covers Kaplan's medical training in the United States,
		  and his Army Service. He briefly explains his decision to become a pediatric
		  physician, then continues to explain his involvement in the Seattle Jewish
		  community. He chronicles the founding of Temple Beth Am and of the Jewish
		  Community Center on Mercer Island, including fundraising, construction,
		  operations, and staffing.</p>
