         <p>Samuel "Uncle Sam" Handsaker was an Oregon pioneer and veteran of the Rogue River Indian Wars.  </p>
         <p>Handsaker came to Oregon in 1853, and joined the Oregon Mounted Volunteers shortly thereafter.  Pioneer Life, a collection of Handsakers writings for various local papers detailing his experiences as a pioneer and soldier, was published in 1908.</p>

         <p>The collection consists of a typed copy of "Across the Plains", which is a transcription of Handsaker's journal from August 25 to September 17, 1853, that is billed as a missing chapter of the book Pioneer Life.  </p>
         <p>This missing chapter was given to the University of Oregon library in 1937 by Handsaker's daughter, Luella Bristow, to supplement the library's copy of Pioneer Life.</p>
