      <abstract encodinganalog="5203_">This collection includes microfilm
		  copies of Clyde A. Duniway's personal and business correspondence from 1908,
		  just before he began his tenure as the president of the University of Montana
		  in Missoula. It continues into 1912 after his contract was not renewed by UM
		  and Duniway is looking for a new position and then is hired as the president of
		  the University of Wyoming in Laramie in 1912.</abstract>

      <head>Biographical Note</head>
      <p>Clyde Augustus Duniway was born in 1866 in Albany, Oregon, to Benjamin
		  Charles Duniway and Abigail Jane Scott. Duniway received an A.B. from Cornell
		  University in 1892 and an A.M. in 1894 and a Ph.D. in 1897 in Political Science
		  from Harvard. An expanded version of his dissertation was published in 1906 as 
		<title>The Development of Freedom of the Press in Massachusetts</title> .
		He taught for eleven years at Stanford University before serving as president
		of the University of Montana in Missoula from 1908 to1912. He next served as
		the president of the University ofWyoming in Laramie and then as president of
		Colorado College. In 1923 he served as director of the British Division of the
		American University in Europe. He next was appointed professor of history at
		Carleton College, where he remained until his retirement in 1937. </p>
      <p>Duniway married Caroline Cushing in 1901. By 1912 the couple had three
		  sons, John, Ben, and David. C. A. Duniway died December 25, 1944, in Stanford,
		  California.</p>

      <p>This microfilm collection includes C.A. Duniway's incoming and
		  outgoing corrrespondence from 1908, just before he began his tenure as the
		  president of the University of Montana in Missoula. It continues into 1912
		  after his contract was not renewed and he is first looking for a new position
		  and then is hired as the president of the University of Wyoming, in Laramie in
		  1912. The business correspondence includes Duniway's interactions with
		  prominent university and Missoula residents such as A.L. Stone, Oscar J. Craig,
		  J.B. Speer, and William Aber as well as interactions with the national college
		  community. In addition to university-related letters, the collection includes
		  personal corresondence with his wife, Caroline Cushing Duniway. When Duniway is
		  travelling, the couple's correspondence offers details of their respective
		  daily experiences and discussion of future plans.</p>

      <p>The reels of microfilm, numbered Reel 2 through Reel 5, were
		  originally held within a larger number of reels. These four reels hold only the
		  materials relevant to Duniway's life in Montana. This archives does not hold
		  any other reels about his life before and after Montana and the location of any
		  other reels is unknown.</p>

		  held in this institution's archives collection RG001, Office of the President's
		  Records. Papers relevant to his tenure as president of the University of
		  Wyoming in Laramie are held in that insitution's President's Office Records.
		  His correspondence with his mother, Abigail Scott Duniway, a prominent women's
		  rights advocate, is included in her papers at the University of Oregon.</p>
