Alice Josephine Shaw was born on February 14, 1909 in Kansas, one of three children
born to Robert Whiteman and Alice Singletary Shaw. Her father was a preacher and the
family moved to Bozeman, Montana sometime after 1920. Known primarily by her middle
name, Josephine or the nickname “Jo,” she graduated from Gallatin County High School
in 1926 and attended her freshman year at Montana State College. She left Bozeman
during the summer of 1927 to attend Ottawa University in Kansas, but returned to
Bozeman by 1930. She married Harry Lee Orendorff in 1940 and the couple lived in
Benedict, Kansas where Josephine died in 1995.
