Biographical Note

Edward W. Clyde (1917-1991) was born in Heber City, Utah to L. Dean and Ardell Buhler Clyde. In his childhood and youth, he worked on the family’s ranch. In 1941, he married Betha (Betty) Jensen and together they raised four children: Susan, Carolyn, Thomas, and Steven.

Clyde received an undergraduate degree in Speech and Economics from Brigham Young University in 1939. In 1942, he received a law degree from the University of Utah. In 1951, Clyde started the Clyde, Meecham and Pratt law firm in Salt Lake City; later, the firm was known as Clyde, Snow, Sessions, and Swenson. Clyde specialized in natural resource laws and litigated many water rights cases, and water reclamation issues, including the Upper Colorado River Compact. Clyde was also involved in the legal planning and negotiations for the Central Utah Project. He sat on the Utah Land Board and Utah Board of Oil, Gas and Mining and served as special consultant to the National Water Commission and National Advisory Council on Public Lands. Clyde also served as attorney for the Salt Lake County Water Conservancy District and the Central Utah Water Conservancy District.

In addition to his career in law, Clyde served the University of Utah's College of Law as a lecturer, a member of the Board of Regents, and president of the Institutional Council. For his service to the University and the State of Utah, he received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Edward W. Clyde died of cancer in 1991.
