<p>A collection of albumen prints on original mounts taken by Tollman and G.W. Van Deusen. Eighteen of the albumen photographs are by Lt. G. W. Van Deusen, First U. S. Artillery. The other three are by Tollman who worked out of South Bend. 10 of the photographs depict housing, officers, and the lighthouse of a military post located at Cape Disappointment. Cape Disappointment, a high headland surmounted by a lighthouse, is located at the north entrance to the Columbia River. Captain John Meares name the site on July 6, 1788, by when he failed to locate the "River of the West" at a point previously charted by Bruno de Heceta on August 17, 1775. The original Native American name was <emph render="italic">Kah-eese</emph>. (Hitchman, Robert. <emph render="italic">Place Names of Washington</emph>.) The other 11 images are of unidentified military posts and houses perhaps in California.</p>
