Audiocassette recording and transcript of an oral history interview with Martin S. Jaffee, January 19, 1994; newsclipping, 1993-1994. Jaffee discusses his membership on and the work of two successive Ethnic Studies Task Forces at the University of Washington. He details the reaction of various students and faculty members to efforts to broaden the scope of the Ethnic Studies requirement to include American Jews. (This requirement was later changed and became an American diversity requirement). He discusses the differing opinions at length and explains why the inclusion of this ethnic group became so contentious. Jaffee also compares and contrasts his teaching experience at the University of Washington with his previous position at The University of Virginia. He comments on the religious preparation and experience of both the Jewish and non-Jewish students who enroll in his classes.
