         <p>James Harrison Collins was a teacher, superintendent of schools, and a representative in the Oregon State Legislature. Collins graduated from Agricultural Collage in 1888. He taught in St. Helens, and Scappoose, and was the superintendent of of schools in Woodburn, Oregon between 1908-1923. In 1915, Collins served as representative from Columbia County in the Oregon State Legislature.</p>

         <p>Collection contains 733 letters organized chronologically.</p>
         <p>Most of the letters are between Collins and his wife Gertrude, and refer to personal and school matters. One series of seven letters is from Thomas E. Zieber, member of the band, 1st Infantry, Washington Volunteers, written from Presidio, California, and from the Philippine Islands, 1898-1899, to Gertrude.</p>
