(From the collection guide for the Richard Daugherty Papers, Cage 808):

Archaeologist Richard Deo Daugherty (1922-2014) was born and raised in Washington
State. He attended the public schools in his hometown of Aberdeen and went on to
Central Washington College and University of Washington. His schooling was
interrupted by World War II when he joined the US Navy Air Corps. During his time in
the Navy, he was a blimp pilot stationed in New Jersey, and taught meteorology and
navigation at the Navy Air Navigation School. After the war, he returned to the
University of Washington. After earning his Ph.D. in Anthropology at University of
Washington, he joined the Anthropology Department at Washington State University in
1950. During his 30-year career at WSU, he taught and supervised undergraduate and
graduate students, served as department chair, and conducted extensive field
research. He led excavation efforts at several of the most important archaeological
sites in Washington, including Ozette, Lind Coulee, and Marmes. After retiring in
1985, he started Western Heritage, Inc., an archaeological consulting firm.
