The Office of Sustainability and Environment was created in 2000 to oversee implementation of the City's Environmental Management Program. Responsibilities of the agency included developing policies and programs to improve environmental performance in City operations; facilitating the City's compliance with environmental regulations; advancing the City's environmental priorities; integrating sustainability and environmental values into City plans, programs, and policies; setting sustainability and environmental targets and objectives for the City, and reviewing and proposing changes to the Environmental Management Program.
The Urban Sustainability Advisory Panel was formed in 2002 by Mayor Gregory Nickels as part of the effort to guide development and implementation of the Environmental Action Agenda and the City of Seattle's sustainabile development initiatives, ensuring clean air, water, and green spaces for the citizens of Seattle, protecting and restoring its natural environment while finding new ways to develop and grow the city, providing economic opportunity for all. The panel was comprised of city officials, leaders from local busineses, representatives from environmental groups, and other stakeholder groups in Seattle. Documents consist of communications between City of Seattle employees and panel members regarding the formation of the panel and meetings, as well as minutes, presentations, and handouts from their meetings.
