Kai Lee graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Experimental Physics in 1966 and received his Ph.D. in Physics from Princeton in 1971. After pursing post-doctoral research at UC Berkeley, Lee worked as a professor at the University of Washington from 1973-1991. There, he also served on the board of the Northwest Power Planning Council. Lee left to teach at Williams College in Massachusetts in 1991.

Lee is the author of Electric Power and the Fate of the Pacific Northwest (1980) among other titles.
