Biographical Note

William Parley Howell and his wife, Lilly Alice Adams, worked a potato farm in Clifton,
Idaho. Parley was active in the LDS church, serving for a time as Clerk of the Clifton
Ward. Their son, Cliff Adams Howell, was born in Clifton on July 10, 1915. Cliff went on
to study at Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, where he fought on the school's
boxing team and graduated from the School of Agriculture in 1939. In 1945 he received
his Vocational Agriculture and High School teaching certificate. Cliff, who was married
to Dixie Howell, died on August 24, 2003.

<scopecontent encodinganalog="description">

This collection represents material about the Howell family of Clifton, Idaho that
Newell Hart collected from Cliff Howell. The time period covered is from 1900 through
1930. There are three distinct groups of records in the collection : family
correspondence, personal papers, and Clifton Ward, church records.

The correspondence was written between 1910 and 1920. There are two sets of letters in
this section. The first were letters written to Parley Howell, while he was in the
L.D.S. Salt Lake City Hospital recovering from surgery. These letters are all postmarked
Clifton, Idaho. There is some information about the area at that time, but most of the
correspondence revolves around Parley's health. The other block of correspondence was
penned from Logan, Utah to Clifton, Idaho during the hospitalization of Cliff Howell.
These letters were written by Cliff's father, Parley. In addition to these two major
runs of correspondence are a few letters concerning varied topics.

The second subject area is the collection contains memorabilia and personal papers from
the Howell family. This material ranges from lumber yard receipts, a daybook, newspaper
clippings and autograph books.

Finally, are records generated from the family's involvement with the community ,
primarily the Clifton Ward of the L.D.S. Church. Of interest is a minute book from
Sacrament and Bishop council meetings at which Harold B. Lee presided over. Other record
books include a Mutual Improvement Association officers minute book, a M.I.A. rollbook
for 1922-1925, and the Clifton Silver Coronet Band roll book.
