Sarah Maria Kelty (neé Scott) was born in 1847; she was a sister of Harvey Scott and Abigail Scott Duniway. Her family emigrated to Oregon in 1852. In 1869, she married James M. Kelty (1842-1919). She lived in Lafayette, Oregon, until 1893, when she moved to Portland, Oregon. She died in 1901. Her daughter, Emily Queen Kelty (later Emily Q. Platts, 1880-1950), married Charles Benjamin "Ben" Riesland in 1903 but divorced in 1920. The couple had two children: Carl B. Riesland (1904-1932) and Mary Scott Riesland (later Mary Riesland King, 1913-2017). She remarried in 1928 to U.S. Army officer Willis A. Platts (1880-1945).
