Biography of L. Clark Bishop

L. Clark Bishop served as Wyoming’s state engineer until 1957 and became a consulting engineer for Columbia-Geneva Steel Co. thereafter. During his professional career, Bishop became involved in various political controversaries, of which his advocacy for the protection of Wyoming’s water resources stands out. As a result, Bishop was awarded a Doctor of Laws degree by the University of Wyoming. After retiring from the steel industry, Bishop devoted his time to uncovering Wyoming history and historical sites. As one of the founders of the Wyoming Pioneer Association and its first Secretary-Treasurer, Bishop was deeply connected to the preservation of the Oregon Trail. In 1955, he finished mapping its 500-mile route. He also produced maps of pieces of other emigrant and freight trails as well as a detailed map of the Pony Express stations between St. Joseph, Missouri and Sacramento, California.
