         <abstract encodinganalog="5203_">Joseph Nathan Teal (1858-1929) was an Oregon rancher, lawyer, investor, and civic leader who was an advocate of waterways development, and served as U.S. Shipping Commissioner from 1920-1921. The collection contains a manuscript of a series of reminiscences of ranch life during the 1850s through the 1870s, in eastern Oregon, that Teal wrote down for his family in 1921.</abstract>

         <p>Joseph Nathan Teal (1858-1929) was born in Eugene, Oregon. He became a cattle and sheep rancher in eastern Oregon. He studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1884. </p>
         <p>Teal operated a law office out of Portland. He specialized in railroad rate matters, and was a strong advocate of waterways development. In 1920-1921, he served as U.S. Shipping Commissioner.</p>

         <p>The collection contains an unpublished manuscript of stories written down for Teal's daughter, titled, "Stories from the Sage Brush Land." The stories are a series of reminiscences of ranch life in eastern Oregon. Dates are not specified, but events probably occurred in the 1850s through the 1870s.</p>
         <p>The manuscript comes with a table of contents, and each "chapter" is a story. At the end of the manuscript there are two essays, on is "Crossing the Plains in '53" (the Nathan Coleman party), and another is "Moving from Eugene to The Dalles, 1862." </p>
