      <p>Washington resident Steve Raymond is a noted angler, fly-fishing author,
            and retired editor and manager of the <emph render="italic">Seattle Times</emph> newspaper. When Mount St.
            Helens erupted on May 18, 1980, Raymond was on a fishing trip with his family at Dry
            Falls Lake. He documented his experiences in a subsequent <emph render="italic">Sports
            Illustrated</emph> article entitled "On the Scene: A Day of Fishing Became a Night of Fear When
            Darkness Fell at Noon". In May of 1981, Raymond and photographer Bill Eppridge were given
            special access to Mount St. Helens and the recovery zone to prepare a follow-up story entitled "Season of Hope", also for <emph render="italic">Sports
               Illustrated</emph>.</p>

      <p>The Steve Raymond Slides of Mount St. Helens document the one-year aftermath and impact
            of the 1980 volcanic eruption at Mount St. Helens, Washington. The collection includes one
            hundred twenty-one 35mm color slides taken by writer Steve Raymond, recording the eruption's devastating and
            transformative impact on the area's landscape and environment. Raymond's images include shots
            taken from the ground and air (via helicopter) of the North and South Forks of the
            Toutle River, as well as the Green River, Spirit Lake and Coldwater Lake, and the crater
            with its pyroclastic flow and lava dome. The collection contains a copy of Raymond's 1980 article describing his experiences on the day of the Mount St. Helens eruption, and his follow-up piece (written one year later) for <emph render="italic">Sports
               Illustrated</emph>.</p>
