         <p>The first Washington Territory Constitutional Convention happened in Walla Walla, Washington in the summer of 1878. During this time, legislators came together to draft a state constitution that was approved by the majority of voters. This document was not recognized by congress. The official Washington State Constitution was composed over a decade later in 1889.</p>

         <p>The Constitutional Convention of Washington Territory Collection, which dates from 1878 through 1978, consists of congressional records, an article from The Washington Historical Quarterly, and the petition to the legislative assembly of Washington Territory concerning giving women the right to vote. There is also a member list for the Walla Walla 1878 Constitutional Convention, a letter to Professor Vernon Carstensen at the University of Washington in 1978, and a xerox of a journal from the Constitutional Convention of 1878.</p>
