Eugene Archer (1930-1973) was best known as a film critic for the New York Times from 1956 to 1965. After a tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force as a cryptographer, Archer attended Columbia University. He began writing for Film Culture magazine until 1960 when he began writing for the New York Times. After 1965, Archer left the Times to do freelance writing in Europe and wrote several screenplays. Archer also interviewed most of the prominent film personalities of the 1960s.
Collection contains biographical material; lists for “auteur” theory; lists and notes for books; magazine and newspaper articles by Archer; notebooks; periodicals; and scripts written by Archer.
There are no access restrictions on the materials for research purposes, and the collection is open to the public.
