Nevills was born to William E. and Mae Davies Nevills on April 9, 1908. He attended the College of the Pacific in Stockton, California. He married Doris Drown in 1933. They had two daughters, Joan and Sandra. He began professional guiding in 1936 on the
San Juan and Colorado Rivers, and he founded Nevills Expeditions in 1938. Also in 1938 he gained fame where he guided two female botanists (including Dr. Elzada Clover) from the University of Michigan. He was frequently depicted in the press as
“the World’s No. 1 Fast-Water Man.” He learned to fly and purchased an airplane in 1946. In 1949 he and his wife Doris died in a plane crash.
