Modoc County Arts Council, Inc. and Modoc Performing Arts Theatre in Alturas, Modoc County, California, stage reenactments of the historical Lost River battle, one of the first conflicts that started the Modoc War (1872-1873). Writer Ben Van Meter and director Charles Massie tell the story of the Modoc Indians trying to keep their ancestral land, and their conflict with the settlers and the U.S. Army. The play is set at the lakeside at California Pines, near Alturas, within an hour's drive of the actual battle site, Lava Beds National Monument.
