      <head>Historical Note</head>
      <p>The United States Post Office at Bozeman, Montana was established on December 7, 1868, and
        the first postmaster was Joseph Roth. Prior to that date mail was delivered to the town by
        private carriers. Other postmasters at Bozeman included: Joseph Hopkins Taylor, 1870-1883;
        Edward C. Alderson, 1883-1885; Robert P. Menefee, 1885-1889; George Budd, 1889-1892; Frank
        J. Nesbitt, 1892-1896; Daniels H. Brooks, 1896-1897; William B. Rurket, 1897-1902; Ira L.
        Kirk, 1902-1911, Allan Cameron, 1911-1915.</p>

      <p>The Bozeman Post Office records consist of a single volume cash book and eight volumes of
        account and record books. The volumes are not complete and have been chronologically
        arranged.</p>

      <p>Record books maintained by the United States Post Office at Bozeman, Montana were
        transferred to Special Collections from the Museum of the Rockies on December 18, 1984. They
        had been initially donated by Jack Lutes to the Museum on November 9, 1962. A single volume
        from the Salesville (Gallatin Gateway) post office has been removed for separate
        processing.</p>
