Penrose, and Stephen B. L. Penrose, Jr. The collection includes correspondence, diaries, travel journals, photographs, and biographical and genealogical information.</abstract>

         <p>Stephen Beasley Linnard Penrose was born in 1864 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He moved to the Walla Walla Valeey in 1890 to work as a minister after attending Williams College. In 1892, Penrose was elected to Whitman College's Board of Trustees. He became Whitman's president on October 5, 1895. In 1897, he married Mary Deming Shipman. Whitman remained president until 1934.</p>

         <p>The Penrose Family Papers consists of correspondence, diaries, travel journals, photographs, and biographical and genealogical information. Materials highlight Mary Shipman Penrose's active role on the Whitman College campus and in the Walla Walla community, Maysie and Frances' graduate school experience at Bryn Mawr, and the published writings of Dr. Penrose. The collection dates from 1893 to 2000.</p>
