			<p>The department of English Language and Literature first appears in WSU catalogs in 1893. It was later renamed to the English Department in 1911. Emmet Langdon Avery (1903-1970), professor of English at Washington State University, earned his B.A. from Franklin College in Indian, and went on to earn an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He joined the faculty of Washington State College in 1927 as an instructor in English, and served as the chair of the English Department from 1964-1968.</p>

			<p>This collection consists of documents pertaining top the WSU English Department and Dr. Avery's research notes about London Theater. Box 1 contains a floor plan for Avery Hall, correspondences from 1945-1948, and Dr. Avery's London Theater research notes. Box 2 contains Avery's London Theater research notes. Box 3 contains students graded work fro 4969-1970 and Dr. Avery's London Theater research notes. Boxes 4-6 are Avery's London Theater research notes. Box 7 contains administrative date from the 1930-1940s. Box 8 contains administrative data from 1970s correspondence. Box 9 contains two framed photographs.  </p>

			<p>This is an unprocessed collection. Any arrangement reflects either a pre-existing order from the records' creators or previous custodians, or preliminary sorting performed by staff. </p><p>Boxes are mostly unorganized. Contains mostly administrative files and notes related to Emmett Avery's study of the London Theatre. Box 9 contains photos of Paul P. Kies, a scholar and former instructor of WSU; and Murray W. Bundy, former instructor. Box 9 is the only box with clear, subject folders that are labeled. </p>
