Stephen Blumberg carried out the largest series of book thefts in United States history. By the time of his arrest in 1990, he had stolen 23,600 books and manuscripts worth over $5 million. Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections at the WSU Libraries was one of the repositories Blumberg targeted. His arrest was largely a result of the work of Steven Huntsberry, who served as a detective for the Washington State University police. Blumberg was convicted and sentenced to 71 months in prison with a $200,000 fine.
