      <abstract encodinganalog="5203_">The <extref linktype="simple" show="new" href="https://collections.lib.utah.edu/search?q=P1469" actuate="onrequest" role="text/html">Alice Lovina Manning photograph collection</extref> contains materials that reflect the life of Alice Lovina Manning(1877-1944) was a teacher and legal secretary who became a laywer for Union Pacific railroad. She was the fourth woman to be admitted into the Utah bar. This collection contains portraits of Manning and pictures of her descendent Alice E. Manning Whipple at a 1998 event honoring Utah women in law.</abstract>

      <p>Alice Lovina Manning (1877-1944) was born on July 6, 1877 in Burr Oak, Iowa. In 1891, she moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, with her family. She graduated from the University of Utah in 1897 and was a teacher until 1906, when she took a job as secretary to the general attorney of the Oregon Short Line Railroad Company. After studying law for six years under the instruction of the general attorney for the Union Pacific, she became the chief clerk of the legal department for the Union Pacific system at Salt Lake City. She worked for the Union Pacific for a number of years before attaining her law degree. In 1923, Manning was the fourth woman to be admitted into the Utah bar. Manning was also involved with women's rights in Utah. Alice L. Manning died in Chicago, Illinois, on July 31, 1944.</p>

      <p>The collection consists of 11 black-and-white portraits and snapshots of Alice Manning, her family, and associates. It also contains 7 color copy prints documenting the Utah's First One Hundred Women Attorneys celebration held on January 14, 1998, which contained displays of Alice L. Manning and other women who practiced law in Utah; Manning's descendant, Alice E. Manning Whipple, was present and honored at the event.</p>
