         <p>Alexander Ross (1783-1856) was born in Scotland and became known as a pioneer and fur trader in Canada and the Pacific Northwest. He worked for the North West Company and Hudson's Bay Company in various posts around the Northwest. In 1810, he was a clerk for John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company and played a role in the founding of Astoria, Oregon, in 1811. He wrote several books about the settlement of the Northwest, including "Adventures of the first settlers on the Oregon or Columbia River."</p>
