Historical Note

Margaret Dolly Hinman was the great-granddaughter of Alanson Hinman, one of the earliest and most notable pioneers to settle in the Forest Grove area of Washington County, Oregon. A Congregationalist minister, he immigrated to Oregon in 1844 and helped to found Pacific University. He served on its Board of Trustees for decades, from the late 1840s until the early 1900s. Many of Alanson Hinman's descendants, including Margaret Dolly Hinman, were students at the University and/or faculty. The Hinmans were related by marriage to several other notable pioneer families in the Tualatin Valley region, including the Gerrish and Sewall families.

The photograph album contains 40 photographs, nearly all of which are portraits of the relatives and friends of Margaret Dolly Hinman. Together, the photographs provide an excellent photographic record of the Hinman Family of Forest Grove, along with several other notable 19th century families of Washington County. The lone landscape photograph in the album, a carte-de-visite format print of Pacific University, shows its first two buildings: Old College Hall and Academy. Probably dating to the late 1860s or early 1870s, this is among the earliest extant photographs of the campus.

Most of the photographs are albumen prints in carte-de-visite format. There are several tintypes, and a few of the images are hand-tinted. They are undated, but were probably taken between the late 1860s and about 1900. There is a handwritten index at the beginning of the book which lists captions for all of the photographs in the album. This index is transcribed in the "Detailed Description of the Collection" section, below.

A note on the flyleaf reads, "This is to go to my grand-nephew Alanson Hinman III. With love from 'Aunt Dolly.'" The album was donated to Pacific University by George Williams, who is a descendant of Margaret Dolly Hinman.
