      <abstract encodinganalog="5203_">Collection includes a photostatic reproduction, typescript copy, and microfilm copy of "History of Oregon" by William Strong, derived from a June 20, 1878, interview of Strong by Hubert Howe Bancroft. Also included are papers from the law office of William Strong and Thomas Nelson Strong in Portland, Oregon. William Strong (1817-1887) came to Oregon in 1850; he served as a judge in the Oregon Territory and later as a justice on the supreme courts of Oregon and Washington.</abstract>

    <bioghist encodinganalog="5450_">
      <p>William Strong (1817-1887) was born in St. Albans, Vermont, and attended Yale University. He served as a teacher and principal at schools in Ithaca, New York, and Cleveland, Ohio, before coming to Oregon by sea in 1850. He served as associate judge in the Oregon Territory, became a justice of the supreme courts of Oregon and Washington, and made his home in Cathlamet, Washington. His son, Portland lawyer Thomas Nelson Strong, was the author of "Cathlamet on the Columbia" (1930).</p>
