      <head>History of the Johns-Manville Corporation</head>

<p>Johns-Manville Corporation was established in 1858 when Henry Ward Johns produced the company’s first model of roofing shingles using hot tar and cloth. A decade later, Johns sought out and earned his first patent for an asbestos product, which would become a foundational product for the company. Johns and Manville joined their business ventures when Charles B. Manville and his sons began operating a pipe insulation business that sold Johns’ products. The two officially merged in 1901. The company ran on the qualities of what asbestos could do until its dangers came to fore in the late 1980s.</p>

<p>The American Heritage Center aspires to approach all areas of our work in ways that are

respectful to those who create, use, and are represented in our collections. For a variety of

reasons, however, users may encounter offensive or harmful language or images in some of our

Therefore, we encourage users to bring questions and concerns about descriptions in our finding aids to our attention via <extref href="mailto:sara.davis@uwyo.edu,bblasi@uwyo.edu">email</extref> or <extref href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd7UKY6227Uluu6mYZv-63VA_hQSNd7kgRhsaLC-UD2NOB9cg/viewform">anonymous web-form</extref>.
