Shelton photographs PH 243 /repositories/2/resources/3057 2.25 linear feet 5 containers 1915-1920 Alfred Cooper Shelton (b. 1891) was a zoological student and assistant at the University of Oregon from 1915-1917, and author of "Distributional List of the Land Birds of West Central Oregon." The collection consists of 317 prints, 285 nitrate negatives, and six glass images, documenting landscape and wildlife in California, Oregon, and Africa. 5 containers, including approximately 345 photographs English .

Collection is open to the public. Collection must be used in Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room.

Due to fragility and volatility, access to glass plates in Box 1 and nitrate negatives in Boxes 2 and 3 is restricted. All decisions regarding use will be at the discretion of the curator for visual materials.

Alfred Cooper Shelton was born Feb. 13, 1891 in Santa Rosa, CA, the son of Abram C. and Mary Shelton. He graduated from Santa Rosa High School and studied at the University of California-Berkeley 1912-1913. In the fall of 1915 he began studying at the University of Oregon, leaving during the fall of 1917 for military service. He worked as an assistant in the zoology department and at the UO Natural History Museum 1916-1917. During World War I he served in the Sanitary Corps, and trained in bacteriology. In 1918 he was posted at Camp Lewis, WA. From 1919-1926 his mailing address was care of a retailer, Johnson-Shelton Co. of Dayton, OH.

The Museum of Vertebrate Zoology at UC-Berkeley holds additional A.C. Shelton images. An author by the same name published "Newfoundland, our north door neighbor" in 1941 and "Down to the sea in Maine" in 1942.

This collection contains images of wildlife and landscapes in Oregon, Washington, California, and South Africa. Images are in a variety of formats, including nitrate negatives, proof sheets, photographic prints, photographic postcards, and glass plate negatives and positives.
