  	<head>Biography of George Jackson Mead</head><p>George Jackson Mead began his career in aviation as an experimental engineer with Sterling Engine Company in 1916.  He worked in the same capacity for Wright-Martin Aircraft, 1916-1919. He was chief engineer for Wright Aeronautical Corporation, 1920-1925 and then was  vice-president of  Pratt &amp; Whitney Aircraft Company, 1925-1929. He helped to found and worked for United Aircraft Corporation through the 1930s. In 1939 he won the Sylvanus Albert Reed Award from the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences for the design and development of high output aircraft engines. He was special assistant to William S. Knudson during World War II.</p>

  	<head>Scope and Content</head><p>The collection contains correspondence, articles, photographs, newspaper clippings, reprints, and certificates related to aviation design, early aviation, and the engineering career of George Jackson Mead. The bulk of the materials date from the 1920s. Also included are two copies of his biography,  "Wings Over the World" (1971) written by his wife, Cary Hoge Mead.</p>
