			<p>Herman J. Deutsch (1897-1979) received his PhD in History from the University of
				Wisconsin in 1926. He taught at the University of Montana before coming to
				Washington State University, where he served as a Professor of History from 1926 to
				1962. After retiring, he taught at the University of Washington and also traveled to
				Vienna, Austria as a Fulbright lecturer. (see Cage 590)</p>

			<p>The Friends of the Library (FOL) was established in 1938 by WSU's president, E. O.
				Holland, and William Wirt Foote, head librarian, to assist in securing support and
				resources for the university library.</p>

		<scopecontent encodinganalog="5202_" id="a4">
			<p>This collection contains papers pertaining to the Friends of the Library (FOL) at
				Washington State University, with records ranging from 1940 to 1959. Theses papers
				were collected by Herman J. Deutsch (1897-1979), a professor of History at WSU from
				1926 to 1962. The collection consists of FOL's committee minutes, constitution,
				membership applications, by-laws, history, newsletters, and newspaper clippings. The
				collection also contains incoming and outgoing correspondence pertaining to the FOL,
				including: acquisitions, events, history textbooks, financial records, membership
				records, as well as letters from Dr. E. O. Holland, President of WSU. Additionally,
				the collection includes a list of residents in the state of Washington from 1945 to
				1946 whose wealth was estimated at fifty-thousand dollars and above.</p>
