Mary Elizabeth was one of the first white children born in Millville, Utah, to Frederick Yeates and Sarah Webb Yeates. In March of 1884 she married Robert James Graham. They had two daughters together. After the passing of her husband in January off 1887, she left her children with her mother in 1892 and took courses in obstetrics and nursing in Salt Lake City. Her notes from this period are documented in this journal.

She returned to Millville and became a midwife, helping to deliver many children. In December of 1902, she married Hyrum Smith Hulse.
