various outings of the Mountaineers Club
</did><odd type="hist"><p>The Mountaineers was formed in 1906 to explore the wild areas and
peaks surrounding the Puget Sound region. The Mountaineers was originally based
on the shared vision of Seattle businessman W. Montelius Price and Seattle
photographer Asahel Curtis. Early members included Bertha Landes (later to
become mayor of Seattle), various members of the Curtis family and Edmond S.
Meany, history professor at the University of Washington, who was The
Mountaineers' president for over 25 years. Women were an important part of the
club from the earliest days; in 1907 half of the 151 registered members were
women. Many of the photographs in this collection were made by female
Mountaineers.</p><p>Original activities consisted of hiking, climbing, skiing, snowshoeing
and stage productions by the Mountaineers Players. The highlight of the year
was the annual summer outing. These generally were for two or three weeks and
involved climbs both major and minor as well as hikes. Summer outings were
attended by up to 100 Mountaineers in some years. On most trips everyone hiked
with pack trains carrying the equipment but a few trips were done in car
caravans. Early outings were at various locations throughout the Olympic and
Cascade Mountains. As time went on The Mountaineers ranged futher afield into
the American and Canadian Rockies, Sierra Nevadas, and various national parks
of the western United States. The summer outings continued until 1980, when
they were discontinued due to the damage that a large group of campers could
wreak on the wilderness.</p><p>The Mountaineers Players began as plays done in The Mountaineers'
Rhododendron Preserve on the Kitsap Peninsula for the entertainment of fellow
Mountaineers. In 1923 the first formal production was done and in 1926 the
Forest Theatre was opened and has remained one of the oldest active outdoor
theaters in the country. Most of the annual productions are musicals and all
actors are volunteer Mountaineers members.</p><p>Today, the club offers even more in the way of activities including
bicycling, photography, kayaking, sailing, international trips and
environmental education classes. The Mountaineers work to ensure that
wilderness areas are preserved and protected through the actions of their
Conservation, Recreation Resources and Stewardship divisions. Volunteer members
track issues, mobilize members, do trail maintenance, work with coalitions, and
lobby local and national legislators. The club's mission is to enrich the
community by helping people explore, conserve, learn about and enjoy the lands
and waters of the Pacific Northwest.</p><p/></odd><scopecontent encodinganalog="5202_" id="a3"><p>The collection contains photograph albums documenting the activities

Players. The photographs in the albums were made by club members during various
outings and the albums were put together and captioned by club members as well.
