Arnold Dee Bates was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps around 1936. He served mostly at CCC Camp F-123 North Fork, which was located in Pierce, Idaho. He kept photographs of the camp, which also feature multiple friends and co-workers.

In March 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt drafted the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Its purpose was to restore millions of acres of devastated forests and other exhausted public lands. It was also a way to provide the economically depressed United States with temporary work and training for young men in the aftermath of the Great Depression.

Arnold Dee Bates served within the CCC around 1936. Originally from Arkansas, Bates joined hundreds of young men in Camp Pike at Little Rock, Arkansas, to form Company 5702 of the CCC. There they trained, then eventually made their way to Camp F-123 North Fork near Pierce, Idaho.

Some of the work that Bates and the company completed while at Camp F-123 included blister rust control, fish rearing, road maintenance, and various camp construction projects.

Photographs were donated by Nancy Bates, the daughter-in-law of Arnold Dee Bates, and first sent to the University of Idaho Library's Center for Digital Inquiry and Learning and added to the Idaho Civilian Conservation Corps digital collection. They were then transferred to U of I Library Special Collections and Archives.
