James Levingston Summers was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on September 11, 1910. He attended Chaffey College in 1928, the University of Wisconsin from 1928-1930, and the University of California in 1939. Throughout his literary career, Summers prided himself on the development and control of writing techniques. Throughout his career, besides being a children's author, Summers was also a high school teacher. He died in 1973.
The collection includes literary manuscripts for novels and short stories, including various early drafts as well as final manuscripts. Also included is correspondence, ranging in date from 1946-1969.
