From 1916 to 1968, Ray T. Rocene was a prominent sports writer in
Missoula, Montana. Born in 1894 in Sweden, Mr. Rocene came to the United States
when he was seven with his mother. He lived in Minnesota until 1910 when he
moved to Missoula. Mr. Rocene began his career as a sports writer in 1916 for
the

Missoulian
. Throughout his career, he covered every area
of sports from local to national to international events. An avid supporter of
local sports, Mr. Rocene always stood up for his teams when they were put down.
Retiring as sports editor in 1960, he continued to write his column, "Rocene's
Sports Jabs," as sports editor emeritus until 1968 when his health began to
fail.

Mr. Rocene married Marie Erickson in 1931 and was the father of two
children, John William Rocene and Alice (Rocene) Smith. He was a member of many
local organizations. Mr. Rocene died December 30, 1968 at the age of 74.

This collection consists of a journal kept by Mr. Rocene from 1917 to
1920. The majority of the entries are baseball statistics with other notes
written in towards the end of the journal. These additional notes seem to
indicate that Mr. Rocene began using the journal as a day planner because the
notes appear to be reminders. Also included are various clippings from an
unidentified newspaper about baseball. The statistics cover national, regional,
and state baseball teams.

The journal contains entries regarding national, regional, and state
individual and team baseball statistics for the 1917 to 1920 seasons. Mr.
Rocene includes many statistics for Major League baseball teams. At the time of
the journal, major league teams were divided into two completely separate
divisions, the American and National Leagues, each consisting of 8 teams. The
American League teams were the St. Louis Browns, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White
Sox, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Washington Senators, New York Yankees,
and Philadelphia Athletics. The National League teams were the Boston Braves,
Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Brooklyn Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies,
Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, and New York Giants. Notable players
mentioned include T. R. (Ty) Cobb and G. H. (George Herman) Ruth, better known
as Babe Ruth. The statistics also include teams from the American Association
league, which consisted of mid-western teams. American Association League teams
mentioned are Louisville and Columbus. Many of the statistics come from teams
and players in the Pacific Coast League. Teams in Seattle, Portland, Oakland,
Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, and Hollywood. Other
national and regional teams included in the journal are Tacoma, Vancouver,
Spokane, Salt Lake, and Vernon. Statistics from teams in Butte, Montana and
Great Falls, Montana are also in the journal.

The entries toward the middle of the journal start to include personal
reminders, indicating that Mr. Rocene began to use the journal as a day
planner. Pages nearing the end of the journal are mostly empty with some of the
writing scratched out. Beginning with the "Cash Account" section of the
journal, more baseball statistics are entered. The last half of the journal
contains some newspaper clippings regarding players from unidentified teams and
Pacific Coast League standings.
