<p>The Northern Pacific Railway Company began construction of a
transcontinental railroad across the northern tier of states in 1870.
Construction began from the east at a point near Duluth, Minnesota, and from
the west at Olympia, Washington. During the ensuing decade, the corporation
experienced many financial difficulties and did not complete construction of
that line until 1883 at Gold Creek, Montana, about fifty miles west of Helena.
Henry Villard, president of the Northern Pacific at this time, planned an
international event to celebrate driving the last spike on September 8,
