association of professional artists from throughout the State of
WashingtonThe Women Painters of Washington (WPW) grew out of a portrait class
for art teachers and professional artists sponsored by the Art Institute of
Seattle, a predecessor to the Seattle Art Museum, in 1930. The founding members
were Elizabeth Warhanik, Dorothy Dolph Jensen, Lily Norling Hardwick, Myra
Albert Wiggins, Anna B. Stone, and Helen Bebb, who joined together on October
6, 1930, to promote their interests and those of other women artists in the
region and to stimulate artistic growth through fellowship.
Activities of the organization have included monthly meetings,
sketching outings, and sponsorship of local and international exhibits. The
group has supported charitable causes, including food banks and donations of
art supplies to women's shelters in Seattle. WPW has had a continuous exhibit
at the University of Washington's Women's Clinic since 1989. Past members and
presidents have included Myra Albert Wiggins, Yvonne Twining Humber, Doris
Totten Chase, and Iris Nichols.

organizations, as well as reproductions and original material used in exhibits
documenting the history of the club. Slides of paintings are organized by
exhibit.
