Scrapbook on politics in Portland, Oregon Coll 853 0.69 cubic feet 1 flat box (19x25) 1915-1969 1915-1917 Scrapbook of newspaper clippings that cover political issues in Portland, Oregon, from 1915 to 1917, including the 1917 mayoral election, as well as City Commissioner George L. Baker (1868-1941) and Mayor Harry Russell Albee (1867-1950). Albee was mayor of Portland from 1913 to 1917. Baker won the 1917 mayoral election, and remained in office until 1933.

George Luis Baker was born in 1868 in The Dalles, Oregon, but spent most of his adult life in Portland. As a young man he worked in theater, and he ran the Baker Theatre in Portland. He intermittently served on the Portland City Council from 1898 to 1913, and from 1915 to 1917, he was Portland's commissioner of public affairs. Baker was elected mayor of Portland in 1917, an office he held for 16 years before retiring in 1933. He died in May 1941.

Harry Russell Albee was born in Rockford, Illinois, in 1867, and came to Portland, Oregon, in 1895. He served as mayor of Portland from 1913 to 1917, and was the first person to hold that office under the commission form of city government. In 1914, Albee and two city commissioners were the subject of a failed recall campaign. Albee died on December 31, 1950.

The collection consists of a scrapbook of newspaper clippings relating to city politics in Portland, Oregon between 1915 and 1917. Many of the clippings are about or refer to City Commissioner George L. Baker or Portland Mayor Harry Russell Albee. The mayoral election of June 4, 1917, which Baker won, is also the topic of many clippings. The front page of the scrapbook reads, "Baker File / Remove no clippings." The scrapbook also contains the Portland Woman's Club 1969 Christmas letter, written by President Marjorie L. Lindvall; the letter's relationship to the rest of the scrapbook is unknown.
